About the Youth Mentoring Project
Youth Mentoring Network was developed by ICAN and ICAN Associates to provide an internet hub for information regarding mentoring programs for children in out of home care in Los Angeles County.
Background:
On May 12, 2009, the ICAN Policy Committee voted to accept the following recommendation:
The ICAN Foster Youth Mentoring Steering Committee will be convened in accordance with the Board of Supervisors’ request to provide a mentor for every foster child in Los Angeles County.
The following agencies or associations should designate one representative and one alternate to participate in the committee meetings: Department of Children and Family Services, Juvenile Dependency Court, Probation, Children’s Law Center, Los Angeles Sheriff’s, Los Angeles Police Department. Also included should be a foster caregiver, a youth representative, and a youth mentor. Other committee members to be included will be determined by the committee.
The purpose of the Foster Youth Steering Committee will be to:
Develop mission, goals and objectives for meeting the Board of Supervisor’s directive to provide mentors for foster children in Los Angeles County.
Generally provide guidance and support to existing mentoring programs and organizations that serve, or are willing to serve, foster youth. The committee will advise and assist programs to build program capacity, expand services and leverage resources.
